What is Balayage?

Balayage is a hair lightening technique where lightener is hand painted onto the hair to create soft, natural-looking highlights with a blended "lived-in" finish.

The word balayage come from the french term meaning "to sweep," which refers to the freehand painting method used instead of traditional foils. Classic balayage creates a subtle, sun-kissed effect and typically lifts the hair a few levels lighter rather than achieving an all over bright blonde.

Today, "balayage" is often used as a general term for soft, dimensional color. In many modern salon services, stylists may combine techniques- such as foils (often called "foiliage") and root shadowing- to achieve a brighter or more customized result while still maintaining that blended, low maintenance look.

Jessica will choose the best technique based on your hair's starting point, condition, end goal and desired level of brightness to create an elevated result.

What is the difference between balayage and highlights?

The main difference between balayage and traditional highlights is the technique used to and the final result- balayage creates a soft blended low maintenance look, while highlights create a brighter more uniform result from roots to ends.

Balayage is a technique where lightener is hand-painted onto the hair(and sometimes done with foils) to create a natural, "lived-in" effect. The lightener typically placed away from the scalp resulting in a softer grow out with less visible regrowth over time.

Traditional highlights use foils and are applied from the scalp through the ends creating consistent brightness throughout the hair. This method gives a more polished, all-over lighter look but tends to show regrowth more quickly, requiring more frequent maintenance.

Both techniques can be customized depending on desired level of brightness, contrast, and maintenance. At our salon, the approach is always tailored- Jessica will choose the most effective technique (or combination of techniques) to create a result that feels seamless, dimensional, and elevated.

How often should I get my hair lightened or colored?

How often you should lighten or color your hair depends on technique used, your desired look and how much maintenance you prefer. Some services are designed to grow out softly, while others require more consistent upkeep.

- Balayage (low-maintenance blonding):

Balayage can be freshened up every 4-6 month with a toner gloss appointment recommended every 6-8 weeks to maintain tone, shine and brightness between major services.

- Highlights (brighter root-to-end blonding):

Highlights need to be retouched every 8-10 weeks, toning is typically done during these appointments to keep the color fresh and balanced.

- Root Retouch Color or gray coverage:

Root retouches for permanent color are usually done every 4-8 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows and how much gray coverage is needed.

While these timelines are general, your maintenance schedule is always customized. At our salon, Jessica will recommend a plan for you based on your hair, lifestyle, and level of upkeep you want- ensuring your hair always looks fresh and healthy.

How long does balayage take?

Every artist is different in their timing, but Jessica averages around 4-6 hours depending on hair length, darkness, and thickness/density.
